The
Hampton Clean City Commission will be conducting its 10th annual Litter
Index on Wednesday, August 5th from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
The index evaluates 55 areas throughout the city on the amount of
visible litter. The scores received in each area influence the Hampton
Clean City Commission's programs and educational efforts. Learn more

Litter Index.
Sea Turtle That Ingested Plastic to
Be Released
Plastic bag litter is more than a beautification
issue. Turtles, fish, sharks, and other aquatic life are endangered
by plastic bags and particles every day. "Kermit" the sea turtle
became ill after ingesting bits of plastic and paper, and a
balloon. The Virginia Aquarium Stranding Team surgically removed the
trash and rehabilitated him. The Stranding Team plans to return him
to the wild on Sunday, June 21. To read more about Kermit, read the
WVEC.com article, "Kermit
the sea turtle to be set free."
Christina Trapani, Virginia Aquarium Stranding Team,
gave a presentation on the impacts of plastic bag litter at the HR CLEAN regional
conference, "Are Plastic
Bags Sacking the Environment?" Her
stranding response presentation shows slides of wildlife which had
ingested or become entangled in plastic bags.
Peninsula Household Hazardous Waste and
Computer Collections
The Virginia Peninsulas Public Service Authority
(VPPSA) will be holding
several special collection events.
Residents of Hampton, James City County, Poquoson, Williamsburg
and York County may dispose of their household hazardous waste
at these events. The City of
Newport News has a separate collection day schedule.
Plastic Bag Conference Presentations
Eighty individuals gathered in
Smithfield to discuss an invasive and migratory species: the plastic
bag. HR CLEAN organized a regional conference, “Are Plastic Bags
Sacking the Environment?” to discuss the impacts of the plastic bags
on the environment. Government workers, citizens, recycling and
retail workers participated in the conference to brainstorm ideas on
innovative regional efforts to balance commerce, convenience and the
environment.
Conference presentations and news articles following
the event will be published.
